FAQs

Superbowl FAQ (Printable PDF)

How do I get the sample to you?

The samples can be delivered to Dairyland Labs – Depere by a number of viable means. These would include:
  • U.S. Mail
  • Courier (ex. Fedex. UPS, Speedee, etc…)
  • Personal Delivery to 1111 Lawrence Drive, De Pere, WI  54115
  • Drop off at sister Dairyland Labs location (Please note: Shipping charges will apply).
Please allow enough time that the samples will arrive by the stated deadline to ensure inclusion into the contest.

Why do I need to send such a large sample?

The required sample size is set for the following reasons:

Haylage/Corn Silage

  • 2 gallons of silage material allow for a good representative sample to be taken from the submitted sample.
  • The remaining portion is then needed for both judging purposes and also for display purposes if the entry makes the top finalists in their respective category.

Hay/Baleage

  • The sample is cored with a hay sampler upon arrival to the lab.  This representative sample is then used for the contest analysis.
  • The remaining portion is then needed for both judging purposes and also for display purposes if the entry makes the top finalists in their respective category.

What can be done for the sample to reach you in the best possible shape?

Preservation of the sample can work well under the following guidelines:

Haylage/Corn Silage

  • Put 2 gallons of the representative sample in a clean plastic bag and seal so no moisture can get in or out.
  • Place the sample in the freezer or cold place until sample is ready to be sent or delivered to the lab.

Baleage

  • Package at least 25 lbs of material.
  • Place the representative sample in an airtight container such as a garbage bag.
  • Keep cold in a freezer or other cold place until sent or delivered to the lab.

Hay

  • Package at least 25 lbs of hay material using twine or wire to hold it in bale form.
  • If sending by Mail or Courier, package bale in a box, but do not enclose it in a garbage bag or plastic.  The natural moisture in the bale can cause damage to the bale under heated conditions.

When will I receive my sample results?

The sample results for all categories will be sent to each entrant approximately 2 ½ weeks after the Hay/Haylage deadline (mid-September). The results will be accompanied by notification as to whether or not their sample has been chosen as a finalist and will be displayed at the show. The extra time needed after the Hay/Haylage deadline is for physical judging of finalist samples and compilation of data.

When will I find out if I won anything?

All winners will be announced at the Worlds Forage Analysis Superbowl luncheon which takes place on Wednesday of World Dairy Expo.  All entrants are invited to the luncheon and will know ahead of time by the letter received whether or not they are a finalist in a given category.  Once the winners are announced, all places will be revealed in the Superbowl display area with compilation handouts readily available.  Following the contest, all winners will be posted on the World Dairy Expo and Dairyland Laboratories Inc. websites.
